Who is the A2 exam for?
For foreigners who need to prove Slovak at A2 level. The exam certificate is attached to an application for long-term residence in Slovakia.
You can register even if you have not taken a course with us. Students and graduates of our courses pay less.
Do I need the A2 exam for permanent residence?
Only if you are applying for long-term residence. The Slovak Act on the Residence of Foreigners distinguishes three types of permanent residence: for five years, for an unlimited period and long-term residence. It requires the Slovak exam at A2 level or higher only for long-term residence.
The law also has exceptions. The exam is not needed, for example, by children under 14 or by people who completed lower secondary education at a school with Slovak as the language of instruction. The foreign police department will tell you what applies in your case.
The exam must take place at a language school or at a public university. ViP inštitút Paulus is a language school listed in the Register of Schools and School Facilities kept by the Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth of the Slovak Republic (school record on the eduZoznam portal).
What is the difference between a course and the exam?
People often mix the two up. In a course you learn Slovak: following a study plan, you gradually improve how well you communicate in Slovak. At the exam, your current level of Slovak is verified.
For a long-term residence application you need the certificate from the exam. A course is not required, you can register for the exam without one.
How does the A2 exam work?
The exam is usually on a Friday. The day looks like this:
- 8:00 to 9:00 registration and identity check
- 9:00 to 10:40 written part
- 10:40 to 11:50 break with refreshments, meanwhile the examiners mark the tests
- from 12:00 oral part, each candidate individually
- after the oral part, your result and certificate
We photograph the written tests and record the oral answer.
What parts does the exam have?
A written part and an oral part. The written part has three tests:
- reading comprehension
- listening comprehension
- grammar and vocabulary
Each candidate takes the oral part individually. To pass, you need at least 70% in both the written and the oral part.
How long does the exam take?
The written part takes 1 hour 40 minutes. The oral exams start at 12:00 and, even with a full group, end by 14:00 at the latest. So expect to be at the school from 8:00 until 14:00 at most.
How do I prepare for the A2 exam?
The exam covers levels A1 and A2. The school follows the method of the Centre for Slovak as a Foreign Language (Studia Academica Slovaca) and the Krížom-Krážom textbooks. If you have completed our A1 and A2 courses, you have learned exactly what the exam tests.
If you have lived in Slovakia for some time but have not taken a course, we recommend the preparation class. It takes place on the Wednesday before the exam at 14:30 and lasts 90 minutes. If more than 20 candidates register, we add another class at 9:00. We explain grammar, such as cases and declension, in Slovak, Ukrainian and Russian.
You receive the preparation materials at the preparation class. Keep Thursday free to study on your own.
What should I bring to the exam?
- a valid identity document
- a blue pen, the tests are written in blue pen only
- the certificate from our course, if you registered at the price for students and graduates
How much does the exam cost?
- exam with preparation class: 200 € (exam 150 € and preparation 50 €)
- exam only: 150 €
- exam for students and graduates of ViP inštitút Paulus courses: 100 €
- exam retake with preparation class: 100 €
You pay the full amount when you register, by card or bank transfer.
If you do not pass, we will explain where you made mistakes and what to study. You can then register for the next date as a retake with a preparation class for 100 €.
Where does the exam take place?
At the ViP inštitút Paulus language school in the Mediahaus building, Fraňa Mojtu 18, Nitra, on the first floor. The preparation class takes place in the same place.
You can park at the Mlyny shopping centre or in the city parking spaces on Fraňa Mojtu street and on Wilsonovo nábrežie.
